In 1980, Wood formed Malfunkshun with his older brother Kevin on guitar and Regan Hagar on drums. The band's alter ego personas, with Wood performing as "Landrew the Love Child," added a layer of theatricality to their live shows. Although they only released two songs, "With Yo' Heart, Not Yo' Hands" and "Stars-n-You," on the Deep Six compilation album, Malfunkshun is often cited as one of the pioneering bands of the grunge movement.
In 1988, while Malfunkshun was on hiatus, Wood began jamming with Green River members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament. This collaboration led to the formation of Mother Love Bone, with guitarist Bruce Fairweather and drummer Greg Gilmore completing the lineup. In 1989, the band signed with PolyGram and released the EP Shine, followed by a tour supporting The Dogs D'Amour.
Mother Love Bone's debut album, Apple, was scheduled for release in 1990, but Wood's struggles with drug dependence threatened to derail the band's momentum. He checked himself into rehab in 1989, hoping to get clean for the album's release. Tragically, Wood was found in a comatose state by his girlfriend on March 19, 1990, after a heroin overdose. He died later that day, leaving behind a legacy that would inspire generations of musicians.
Andrew Wood's influence can be seen in the many bands that followed in his footsteps. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains, among others, have cited Wood and Mother Love Bone as a key inspiration.
