A comedic actor with a distinctive voice, best known for his roles in TV shows and films, including "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and "Modern Family".
Andy Devine, an American character actor, is best known for his distinctive raspy, crackly voice and his iconic roles in Western films and television series. With a career spanning over four decades, Devine left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry, becoming synonymous with the rugged, laid-back charm of the American West.
Born on October 7, 1905, in Flagstaff, Arizona, Devine grew up in Kingman, Arizona, where his family moved when he was just a year old. His father, Thomas Devine Jr., was born in 1869 in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, and his mother, Amy Ward, was a granddaughter of Commander James H. Ward, the first officer of the United States Navy killed during the Civil War.
Devine attended St. Mary's and St. Benedict's College, Northern Arizona State Teachers College, and later played football at Santa Clara University. His experience on the football field led to his first sizable film role in The Spirit of Notre Dame in 1931.
After college, Devine moved to Hollywood, where he worked as a lifeguard at Venice Beach, conveniently located near the studios. While filming Doctor Bull at Fox Studios in 1933, he met his future wife, Dorothy House, whom he married on October 28, 1933.
Devine's unique wheezy voice, initially thought to be a liability, became his trademark, landing him roles in numerous Western films and television series. He is perhaps most remembered as Cookie, the sidekick of Roy Rogers, in 10 feature films, as well as his appearances alongside John Wayne in Stagecoach (1939), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), and How the West Was Won (1962).
Devine's marriage to Dorothy House lasted over 43 years, until his passing on February 18, 1977. The couple had two children, Timothy Andrew Tad Devine and Dennis Patrick Gabriel Devine.
