A founding member of the rock band Free, known for co-writing the iconic hit "All Right Now" and his soulful, melodic bass lines. His work has influenced many rock musicians.
Andy Fraser, the British musician and songwriter, is best known as the bassist and co-composer for the rock band Free, which he helped found in 1968 at just 15 years old. His work with Free led to the creation of the timeless hit "All Right Now," a song that would go on to top the charts in over 20 territories and earn over 1,000,000 radio plays in the United States.
Born on July 3, 1952, in London's Paddington area, Fraser's mixed heritage – his father was Barbadian-Guyanese, and his mother was English – would later influence his musical style. He began playing the piano at five and was classically trained until he switched to guitar at 12. By 13, he was already performing in East End, West Indian clubs.
After being expelled from St Clement Danes Grammar School, Fraser enrolled at Hammersmith College of Further Education, where he met Sappho Korner, whose father, Alexis Korner, would become a mentor to him. It was through Korner that Fraser landed a gig with John Mayall, and eventually, he joined Free, alongside Paul Rodgers, Paul Kossoff, and Simon Kirke. Fraser's partnership with Rodgers led to the creation of "All Right Now," which would become a defining song of the 1970s rock scene.
After leaving Free in 1972, Fraser founded the rock band Sharks, which enjoyed moderate success in the 1970s. Although his subsequent projects never reached the same heights as Free, Fraser's contributions to rock music were recognized with a BMI London MillionAir Award in 2006, marking over 3 million radio and television plays of "All Right Now."
Fraser's personal life was marked by ups and downs, including the divorce of his parents and his own struggles with addiction. However, he continued to play music and remained involved in the industry until his passing on March 16, 2015.
Andy Fraser's work with Free helped shape the sound of 1970s rock music, influencing countless bands and artists. His legacy extends beyond his music, serving as an inspiration to young musicians from diverse backgrounds.
Free's music, including "All Right Now," has been featured in numerous films, TV shows, and commercials, introducing Fraser's work to new generations of fans.
