Fred, a renowned French cartoonist, is best known for his iconic series Philmon, which has been entertaining readers since 1965. With a career spanning over six decades, Fred has left an indelible mark on the Franco-Belgian comics tradition.
Born on March 5, 1931, in Paris, France, to Greek immigrant parents, Fred began his cartooning journey in his early twenties. His first published work appeared in the magazine Zéro in 1954, followed by contributions to numerous French and foreign publications, including Ici Paris, France Dimanche, Punch, and The New Yorker.
In 1965, Fred created Philmon, a series that would become his most famous creation. Initially intended for the Franco-Belgian comics magazine Spirou, the 15-page story was rejected, only to be picked up by René Goscinny, who published it in Pilote magazine. The first Philmon adventure, "Le mystère de la clairière des trois hiboux," was serialized, marking the beginning of a beloved series that would continue for decades.
Fred's work extends beyond Philmon. He co-founded the satirical journal Hara-Kiri with Georges Bernier and François Cavanna in 1960, serving as its artistic director and drawing its first 60 covers. He also wrote scenarios for several artists, including Jean-Claude Mézières, Loro, Georges Pichard, Hubuc, Mic Delinx, and Alexis.
Fred passed away on April 2, 2013, at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy of creativity and laughter. His final Philmon album, "Le train où vont les choses," was released on February 22, 2013, bringing closure to the beloved series.
