Former goalkeeper and current manager who played for several clubs, including Nottingham Forest and Sunderland, and managed teams in the English Football League.
Born on October 11, 1970, in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Marriott's passion for football led him to join Arsenal as a trainee in April 1987. He turned professional in October 1988, but never made the first team at Highbury. A move to Nottingham Forest in June 1989, for a fee of £50,000, marked the beginning of his professional journey.
To gain first-team experience, Marriott was sent out on loan by Brian Clough to West Bromwich Albion in September 1989. He made his Football League debut with Albion in a 3-1 win at Leicester City on September 9. Later that season, he had loan spells with Blackburn Rovers and Colchester United. In August 1991, he was loaned out to Burnley.
In October 1993, Marriott moved to Wrexham for a fee of £200,000. Over the next five years, he became a regular at the Racecourse Ground, playing over 250 times and earning five Welsh international caps.
In August 1998, Marriott joined Sunderland for £200,000, but failed to establish himself. He was set to join Cardiff City in September 2000, but decided to stay at Sunderland after failing to agree personal terms. A loan spell at Wigan Athletic in January 2001 was followed by a permanent move to Barnsley on a free transfer at the end of the season. Marriott also had a brief stint at Birmingham City in March 2003, joining as goalkeeping cover after Nico Vaesen suffered injured knee ligaments.
Andy Marriott's journeyman career may not have been marked by glittering trophies or international acclaim, but it is a testament to his dedication and perseverance. With over 500 appearances in his professional career, he has earned a place in the hearts of fans and fellow players alike.
In an interview, Marriott once said, "I've always tried to be a good professional, to work hard, and to be honest with myself." This philosophy has guided him throughout his career, earning him the respect of his peers and the admiration of fans.
Andy Marriott's storied career serves as a reminder that success is not solely measured by trophies or accolades, but by the dedication and passion one brings to the beautiful game.
