The 15th-century shogun who briefly restored the Ashikaga shogunate's power and attempted to reform the government, but ultimately failed to bring lasting stability. He's remembered for his short-lived yet significant reign.
Ashikaga Yoshizumi, born on January 15, 1481, and died on September 6, 1511, was the 11th shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate, reigning from 1494 to 1508 during the Muromachi period of Japan. He is known for his tumultuous reign, marked by power struggles and conflicts with other daimyos, and his significant impact on Japanese history.
Ashikaga Yoshizumi was the son of Ashikaga Masatomo and grandson of the sixth shogun Ashikaga Yoshinori. His childhood name was Seikō, and he was later called Yoshitō (sometimes translated as Yoshimichi) and then Yoshitaka. In a twist of fate, Yoshizumi was adopted by the 8th shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, which would eventually lead to his rise to power.
In 1494, Yoshizumi was installed as the shogun by Hosokawa Masamoto, a powerful daimyō who controlled the government. This marked the beginning of Yoshizumi's tumultuous reign, which was characterized by power struggles and conflicts with other daimyos. Despite the challenges, Yoshizumi managed to maintain his position as shogun for over a decade.
In 1508, Yoshizumi was stripped of his title as shogun by the 10th shogun Ashikaga Yoshitane, who became shogun for a second period of time. Despite his fall from power, Yoshizumi's legacy lived on through his sons, who would go on to become shoguns themselves. Ashikaga Yoshiharu would hold nominal powers as the 12th Muromachi shogun, and Ashikaga Yoshihide would assume nominal powers as the 14th shogun.
Ashikaga Yoshizumi's family life was marked by significant relationships and alliances. His father was Ashikaga Masatomo, and his mother was a daughter of Mushanakoji Takamitsu. He was adopted by Ashikaga Yoshimasa and Hino Tomiko. Yoshizumi married Hino Akiko and had a concubine who was speculated to be a daughter of Shiba Yoshihiro or Rokkaku Takayori. He had two sons, Ashikaga Yoshiharu and Ashikaga Yoshitsuna, who would go on to become shoguns.
The years during which Yoshizumi was shogun are specifically identified by multiple era names or nengō:
