In 2005, Watson participated in the Quebec International PeeWee Hockey Tournament with the Detroit Compuware Ambassadors minor ice hockey team. He verbally committed to the University of Maine Black Bears college hockey program but ultimately chose to play with the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL instead.
