Auvergne Mary Doherty was a pioneering Australian businesswoman and lawyer who shattered glass ceilings in the early 20th century. Born in Perth, Western Australia in 1896, she went on to become one of the first nine women called to the English Bar, and the first Western Australian woman to do so.
Auvergne was raised abroad, attending Convent schools in Belgium and England, including the prestigious Convent of Holy Child Jesus in London. Her education continued at Oxford University, where she graduated and matriculated in 1920.
In 1922, Auvergne was called to the English Bar, following the enactment of the Sex Disqualification Removal Act of 1919. This milestone made her the first Commonwealth Citizen and Western Australian to be called to the English Bar.
Although she gained admission to Middle Temple, Auvergne did not pursue a career in law, likely due to her family's financial circumstances. Instead, she worked as a secretary at the British Drama League before returning to Western Australia in 1930.
After her father's death in 1935, Auvergne took over his cattle business in the Northern Territory, partnering with Mr. Michael Durack. She led the company for 15 years before resigning as director in 1950, four years before the company was wound up.
Auvergne Doherty's remarkable achievements have left a lasting impact on Australian history. Her pioneering spirit and determination paved the way for future generations of women in law and business.
Auvergne Doherty passed away on January 3, 1961, and is buried at Karrakatta Cemetery in Western Australia, alongside her father.
