Barbara Thompson, a renowned English jazz saxophonist, flautist, and composer, is best known for her work in fusion jazz and her contributions to the genre. With a career spanning over four decades, Thompson has left an indelible mark on the music world, blending classical and jazz elements with rock and Latin rhythms.
Born on July 27, 1944, Thompson began her musical journey at the Royal College of Music, where she studied clarinet, flute, piano, and classical composition. However, it was the music of Duke Ellington and John Coltrane that ultimately drew her to jazz and saxophone.
Thompson's career took off in the 1970s, when she became part of Neil Ardley's New Jazz Orchestra and appeared on albums by Colosseum, a progressive rock band. She went on to co-found three bands: United Jazz and Rock Ensemble, Barbara Thompson's Jubiaba, and Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia.
In 1996, Thompson was awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for her services to music.
Thompson has collaborated with some of the most prominent figures in music, including Andrew Lloyd Webber, with whom she worked on musicals such as Cats and Starlight Express, as well as his Requiem and Variations album. She has also written classical compositions, music for film and television, and a musical of her own.
In 1997, Thompson was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, which eventually led to her retirement as an active saxophonist in 2001. However, she continued to work as a composer and returned to the stage in 2003 for a tour with Colosseum. In 2020, she appeared in an episode of the Channel 4 documentary series 24 Hours in AE, which featured her experience in an accident and emergency department.
Despite her health challenges, Thompson's contributions to jazz and rock have left a lasting impact on the music world. Her legacy continues to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike.
