Australian rules footballer who played for the West Coast Eagles and won the 1992 AFL Premiership. Known for his impressive ruckwork and dominant performances on the field.
Ben McKinley is an Australian rules footballer who made a name for himself in the Australian Football League (AFL), playing for the West Coast Eagles and North Melbourne Football Club. He is particularly known for his impressive goal-kicking skills, earning him the title of West Coast's leading goalkicker in 2007 and Rookie of the Year at the Club Champion Awards.
Born on March 4, 1987, McKinley played all of his junior football with the Yarrambat Junior Football Club, from U10s to U17s. He later attended Ivanhoe Grammar School, where he played for the Old Ivanhoe Football Club. His skills didn't go unnoticed, and he was soon playing for the Northern Knights in the TAC Cup competition, attracting the attention of talent scouts.
McKinley was recruited by the West Coast Eagles as the number 29 draft pick in the 2005 AFL Draft. He made his debut for the Eagles in Round 15, 2007, against Port Adelaide. His impressive performance in the Western Derby, where he kicked three goals, earned him a spot in the team. He went on to kick four of his team's five goals against Sydney, and a five-goal effort in the Eagles' loss to Port Adelaide in Round 5 saw him nominated for the Rising Star award.
One of his most notable performances was against Essendon late in the season, where he single-handedly destroyed the Bombers with a 7-goal man of the match performance. He finished the season as West Coast's leading goalkicker and was named Rookie of the Year at the Club Champion Awards.
During the 2010 AFL Trade Week, McKinley requested a trade to North Melbourne Football Club. The Eagles agreed to trade him to North Melbourne in exchange for pick 86 in the 2010 AFL Draft. Unfortunately, McKinley was delisted from North Melbourne at the end of the 2012 season after failing to play a senior match.
Ben McKinley's impressive AFL career, although relatively short, left a lasting impact on the game. His goal-kicking skills and impressive performances earned him recognition and respect from his peers and fans. Although he may no longer be playing in the AFL, his contribution to the sport will be remembered for years to come.
