Benny Benjamin, affectionately known as "Papa Zita," was the primary drummer for the legendary Motown Records studio band, The Funk Brothers. His dynamic style and phenomenal skills behind the drum kit earned him a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003 and the title of 11th best drummer of all time by Rolling Stone magazine in 2016.
Born on July 25, 1925, in Birmingham, Alabama, Benjamin's love affair with drums began in the 1940s, inspired by the big band jazz groups of the era. His talent and dedication led him to become Motown's first studio drummer in 1958, where he worked closely with renowned producers like Berry Gordy.
Benjamin's drumming style was the backbone of many Motown classics, including Barrett Strong's "Money (That's What I Want)," The Miracles' "Shop Around," and The Contours' "Do You Love Me." His collaboration with James Jamerson, the legendary bassist, was particularly noteworthy, with producers often refusing to work on sessions without this dynamic duo. The Beatles, upon meeting Gordy in the UK, were especially impressed by Benjamin's drumming style.
Benjamin drew inspiration from drumming greats like Buddy Rich and Tito Puente. He recorded using a unique set-up comprising Ludwig, Slingerland, Rogers, and Gretsch components, paired with Zildjian cymbals. His influence can be heard in the works of The Temptations ("Get Ready" and "My Girl"), Stevie Wonder ("Uptight (Everything's Alright)"), and Gladys Knight & the Pips ("I Heard It Through the Grapevine").
By the late 1960s, Benjamin struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, which led to fellow Funk Brothers Uriel Jones and Richard "Pistol" Allen taking on more recording duties. Tragically, he passed away on April 20, 1969, at the age of 43, due to a stroke.
