Born on April 19, 1944, in Long Branch, New Jersey, Worrell demonstrated an extraordinary talent for music from a tender age. He began formal piano lessons at three and wrote a concerto at eight. Worrell went on to study at the prestigious Juilliard School and later graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1967.
After meeting George Clinton, the leader of the doo-wop group The Parliaments, Worrell joined forces with Clinton and the backing band, The Funkadelics, to form Parliament-Funkadelic. This collective, which would later become known as P-Funk, embarked on a journey to define the sound of funk and soul music in the 1970s.
As a key contributor to P-Funk, Worrell played a wide range of instruments, including the grand piano, Wurlitzer electric piano, Hohner Clavinet, Hammond B3 organ, ARP String Ensemble, and Moog synthesizer.
