Born William Earl Collins on October 26, 1951, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Bootsy was nicknamed by his mother, who simply said, "Because you looked like a Bootsy." Growing up in a musical family, Bootsy's older brother, Phelps "Catfish" Collins, was also a musician, and together they formed The Pacemakers in 1968. This funk band would eventually become James Brown's backing band, known as The J.B.s, after most of Brown's original band members quit over a pay dispute in 1970.
Collins' work with James Brown and The J.B.s was instrumental in shaping the sound of funk music. He played on some of Brown's most intense funk recordings, including "Get Up I Feel Like Being a Sex Machine" and "Super Bad." In 1972, Collins joined the Parliament-Funkadelic collective, where he became an integral part of the group's sound and style, known for his driving bass lines and humorous vocals. His work with Parliament-Funkadelic earned him a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, alongside 15 other members of the collective.
