Born on March 8, 1957, in Los Angeles, California, Childs was exposed to music from a young age. At 16, he attended the Community School of the Performing Arts, sponsored by the University of Southern California, where he studied music theory with Marienne Uszler and piano with John Weisenfluh. He later enrolled at the University of Southern California, graduating with a degree in composition under the tutelage of Robert Linn.
Childs' professional career took off in the 1970s, playing with jazz legends such as J. J. Johnson and Freddie Hubbard. His early influences as a pianist included Herbie Hancock, Keith Emerson, and Chick Corea, while as a composer, he drew inspiration from Paul Hindemith, Maurice Ravel, and Igor Stravinsky.
As a solo artist, Childs has released a string of critically acclaimed albums, starting with Take for Example, This... in 1988, followed by Twilight Is Upon Us, His April Touch, and Portrait of a Player. His collaboration with Chick Corea led to the release of I've Known Rivers on Stretch Records in 1995, and The Child Within on Shanachie Records in 1996.
Childs' exceptional arranging skills have led to collaborations with a diverse range of artists, including Sting, Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Botti, Gladys Knight, Michael Bublé, David Foster, Phil Ramone, and Claudia Acuña. Notably, his arrangement of Dianne Reeves' project The Calling: Celebrating Sarah Vaughan won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2000.
