With hits like "I'll Be Around," "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love," and "The Rubberband Man," Henderson's soulful voice and harmonies contributed to the group's unique sound and enduring legacy.
Born on August 9, 1939, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Henderson grew up in Royal Oak Charter Township, Michigan. In 1954, he and four friends from Ferndale High School formed a group originally called The Domingos, which later became The Spinners.
The Spinners' big break came in 1964 when they signed with Motown Records. Henderson's vocals were featured on several hit singles, including "It's a Shame," co-written by Stevie Wonder, Syreeta Wright, and Lee Garrett, and produced by Wonder himself. This song became the group's biggest single on the Motown Records label, reaching number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number three on the RB singles chart.
The Spinners were nominated for six Grammy Awards and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, becoming the second African American musical group to achieve this honor. Henderson remained with the group for an impressive 50 years, until 2004. Posthumously, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023 as a member of The Spinners.
Billy Henderson passed away on February 2, 2007, at the age of 67, due to complications from diabetes. He is buried at Detroit's Woodlawn Cemetery. Henderson's contributions to the music world continue to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike.
