Maharaj began his dance training at the tender age of four under the guidance of his uncles, Lachhu Maharaj and Shambhu Maharaj, and his father.
By the age of seven, Maharaj was already performing solo in West Bengal, and by thirteen, he had begun teaching the dance form at the Sangeet Bharti in New Delhi. He went on to teach at the Bharatiya Kala Kendra in Delhi and later became the Head of Faculty and Director at the Kathak Kendra, a unit of the Sangeet Natak Akademi. Maharaj's exceptional talent and dedication earned him the prestigious Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honor, in 1986.
