Boek IV was born on July 15, 1442, in Kladsko, to George of Podbrady, the King of Bohemia, and his wife Kunigunde of Sternberg. Although his exact birth date is unknown, he was the firstborn son of the royal couple. Following family tradition, Boek received the baptismal name of his ancestors from the house of the Lords of Kunstadt.
Despite being the firstborn, Boek's father did not expect him to succeed as Count due to a mental disability. As a result, he was not created an Imperial Prince or made Count of Kladsko. However, in 1458, Boek's father transferred the Podbrady possessions of Nchod and Hummel to him and his brother Victor, reserving the right to appoint the captains. A year later, the brothers confirmed Nchods existing privileges and granted more.
In 1471, after King George's unexpected death, his sons agreed to divide the inheritance. Boek received Litice Castle, which included Rychmberk Castle, and the towns of Tnit nad Orlic, amberk, Choce, and Kunvald. He also received the city of Jin and the Lordship of Ve.
Boek IV of Podbrady's life serves as a testament to the complexities of nobility and the unexpected turns that life can take. Despite facing challenges due to his mental disability, Boek played an important role in the family's history and left a lasting legacy in the regions he governed.
