During World War II, he was evacuated to Porthleven in Cornwall, where he stayed with Canon Edward Thornton Gotto and his wife.

Military Service and Pseudonym

Forbes completed four years of military service in the Intelligence Corps and Combined Forces Entertainment Unit, during which time he started writing short stories. After completing his military service in 1948, he was obliged to change his name to avoid confusion with actor John Clark. Lionel Gamlin of the BBC invented his pseudonym, Bryan Forbes.
