He directed the cult classic The Stepford Wives (1975) and wrote and/or directed several other critically acclaimed films, including Whistle Down the Wind (1961), Séance on a Wet Afternoon (1964), and King Rat (1965).

Forbes completed four years of military service in the Intelligence Corps and Combined Forces Entertainment Unit, during which time he started writing short stories. After completing his military service in 1948, he was obliged to change his name to avoid confusion with actor John Clark. Lionel Gamlin of the BBC invented his pseudonym, Bryan Forbes.

Forbes was known for his humanitarian approach to filmmaking, often exploring themes of social justice, morality, and the human condition. He believed that films should challenge audiences and provoke thought, rather than simply entertain.
Forbes married actress Nanette Newman in 1955, with whom he had two daughters, Sarah and Emma. He passed away on May 8, 2013, at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most important figures in the British film industry.
