Carlos Hernández, a Venezuelan former Major League Baseball catcher, is renowned for his exceptional defensive skills and impressive career spanning over a decade. With a career that traversed three prominent teams, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and St. Louis Cardinals, Hernández etched his name in the annals of baseball history.
Signed by the Dodgers as a free agent in 1984, Hernández became the second Venezuelan catcher in MLB history, following in the footsteps of Bo DÃaz. He made his major league debut in the 1990 season, serving as a backup catcher to Mike Scioscia and Mike Piazza. During his tenure with the Dodgers, Hernández participated in 230 games, including 133 starts, showcasing his remarkable defensive prowess.
In 1997, Hernández signed with the San Diego Padres, where he eventually became a regular catcher, batting .262 with 9 home runs and 52 runs batted in in 129 games played. His exceptional performance earned him a spot in 22 postseason games, where he hit .299 with one home run and two RBI.
After retiring from his playing career, Hernández transitioned into coaching, starting as the manager of the Toros de Tijuana in the Mexican League in 2004. He later returned to the San Diego Padres organization as a catching coordinator from 2005 to 2007. In 2006, he took the helm as the manager of the Leones de Caracas in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, a position he held until 2008.
In 2012, Hernández rejoined the San Diego Padres as a color analyst for Spanish game broadcasts on Fox Deportes and their Spanish radio broadcast on XEMO.
Born on May 24, 1967, Hernández's journey in baseball was marked by significant milestones. He opened a Venezuelan restaurant, Caribbean Flavor, in the San Diego suburb of Poway, which, unfortunately, closed in 2011.
