The 6th President of Israel, a decorated military leader and statesman, played a crucial role in shaping Israel's foreign policy and diplomatic relations. He's most known for his strong leadership during the 1982 Lebanon War.
Chaim Herzog, a prominent Israeli politician, general, lawyer, and author, is best known for his remarkable service as the sixth President of Israel from 1983 to 1993. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in shaping the country's political landscape and leaving an indelible mark on its history.
Born on September 17, 1918, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Chaim Herzog was the son of Rabbi Yitzhak HaLevi Herzog, who would later become the Chief Rabbi of Ireland and subsequently of Mandatory Palestine and the State of Israel. Herzog's family relocated to Dublin, Ireland, where he spent most of his childhood. In 1935, he made the significant decision to immigrate to Mandatory Palestine, where he joined the Haganah, a Jewish paramilitary organization, and actively participated in the 1936-1939 Arab revolt.
Following World War II, Herzog returned to Palestine and fought valiantly in the Battles of Latrun during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. He eventually retired from the Israel Defence Forces in 1962, with the distinguished rank of major general.
After leaving the military, Herzog pursued a career in law and co-founded Herzog, Fox & Neeman, a law firm that would become one of Israel's largest and most respected. In 1972, he took on a new challenge as Israel's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, a position he held until 1978. During this tenure, he famously denounced UN General Assembly Resolution 3379, which equated Zionism with racism, and symbolically tore up the resolution before the assembly.
In 1981, Herzog entered politics, winning a Knesset seat as a member of the Alignment. Just two years later, in March 1983, he was elected to the largely ceremonial role of President, a position he held for two five-year terms until 1993.
Throughout his remarkable career, Chaim Herzog demonstrated unwavering dedication to the State of Israel and its people. His presidency was marked by a strong commitment to social justice, education, and the advancement of women's rights. He also played a crucial role in fostering diplomatic relations with other nations and promoting peace in the region.
Herzog's legacy extends beyond his political achievements. He was a prolific author, penning several books on military history, politics, and law. His son, Isaac Herzog, followed in his footsteps, becoming the leader of the Israeli Labor Party and the incumbent President of Israel, making them the first father-son duo to hold the office.
Chaim Herzog's numerous accolades include the rank of major general, his service as President of Israel, and his role as Israel's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. He was also a proud recipient of the prestigious Israel Prize in 1991, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the State of Israel.
Herzog's remarkable life came full circle on April 17, 1997, when he passed away at the age of 78. He was laid to rest on Mount Herzl, Jerusalem, amidst the nation's mourning for a true leader and statesman.
These powerful words, spoken by Chaim Herzog during his presidency, reflect his unwavering commitment to the State of Israel and its people, and continue to inspire generations to come.
