Charles II, also known as Charles the Bad, was the King of Navarre from 1349 until his death in 1387, as well as the Count of Évreux from 1343. Charles was born in Évreux, France, on October 10, 1332, to Philip of Évreux and Joan II of Navarre. Through his mother, he inherited extensive lands in Normandy, which he received as compensation for resigning her claims to France, Champagne, and Brie in 1328. His father, Philip, was the first cousin to King Philip VI of France, making Charles a member of the French royal family.
In October 1349, Charles' mother died, and he succeeded to the throne of Navarre. He was crowned in 1350, taking his coronation oath in Navarro-Aragonese, a language spoken in the Kingdom of Navarre.
