He attended high school at Sparta High School, New Jersey, before moving on to play college basketball for the Ohio State Buckeyes. During his four seasons with the Buckeyes, Jent honed his skills and developed a passion for the game that would propel him to a successful career in the NBA.
Undrafted in the 1992 NBA draft, Jent was drafted in the fourth round (50th overall) in the 1992 CBA draft. He began his professional career with CBA teams Rapid City Thrillers and Columbus Horizon. Although his NBA playing career was brief, Jent played three games each for the Houston Rockets (winning a championship ring in 1994) and New York Knicks (1996-1997). He also played in 11 playoff games in 1994, earning him the rare distinction of having played in more career playoff games than regular season games in the NBA.
Jent's coaching career began with the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2003-2004 season as an assistant coach. The following season, he worked in the same capacity with the Orlando Magic, taking on the role of interim head coach for the final 18 games of the 2004-2005 season (going 5-13) after Johnny Davis was fired.
From 2006 to 2011, Jent served as Assistant Coach/Director of Player Development with the Cleveland Cavaliers, playing a crucial role in the development of LeBron James.
