Chris Whitley was an American blues-rock singer-songwriter and guitarist, known for his unique sound that drew from the traditions of blues, jazz, and rock. With a career spanning over two decades, Whitley released more than a dozen albums, had two songs chart on the Billboard mainstream rock charts, and received two Independent Music Awards.
Whitley was born on August 31, 1960, in Houston, Texas, to an artistic family. His father was an art director, and his mother was a sculptor. Growing up, Whitley moved around the country, living in Dallas, Oklahoma, Connecticut, Mexico, and Vermont. This eclectic upbringing exposed him to a wide range of musical influences, from Muddy Waters to Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix, which would later shape his unique sound.
In the early 1980s, Whitley began his music career, busking on the streets of New York City and collaborating with musicians Marc Miller, Arto Lindsay, and Michael Beinhorn. His big break came in 1981 when he was given a plane ticket to Ghent, Belgium, where he lived for six years, recording several albums and playing with various bands, including Kuruki, 2 Belgen, Nacht Und Nebel, Alan Fawn, and A Noh Rodeo.
In 1988, producer Daniel Lanois heard Whitley perform at the Mondo Cane club in New York City and helped him obtain a recording contract with Columbia Records. This led to the release of Whitley's debut album, which included the hit singles "Big Sky Country" (No. 36 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts) and "Living with the Law" (No. 28 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts).
In the 2000s, Whitley continued to release critically acclaimed albums, including Perfect Day (2000), a collection of cover songs, and Rocket House (2001). His song "Breaking Your Fall" from the album Hotel Vast Horizon (2003) won the 3rd Annual Independent Music Awards for Folk/Singer-Songwriter Song, while his composition "Her Furious" won the 4th Annual Independent Music Award for Blues/RB Song in 2004.
Throughout his career, Whitley's music reflected his deep connection to the blues and his desire to explore the human experience.
