Austrian extreme skier and mountaineer who conquered the Seven Summits in record time, earning the nickname "The Speed King of the Seven Summits"
Christian Stangl, an Austrian alpine style mountaineer and mountain guide, is renowned for his exceptionally fast ascents of high mountains, earning him the nickname "Skyrunner". In 2013, he made history by becoming the first person to ascend the three highest mountains on all seven continents, known as the Triple Seven Summits.
Born on July 10, 1966, in Landl, Austria, Stangl developed a passion for climbing at a young age. He began his climbing career at 16, venturing into solo climbing, speed climbing, enchainment, and winter climbing in the Alps.
After completing his education as an electrical engineer, Stangl pursued high-altitude mountaineering in the Andes and the Himalayas in 1990. However, his journey was not without challenges. In 1991, he was seriously injured in an avalanche while attempting to climb a new route in the south wall of Baintha Brakk.
Stangl's breakthrough came in 1998 when he reached the Shishapangma, his first 8000er, via the southwest face, also known as the British Route. This achievement marked the beginning of his speed climbing career, which would eventually earn him the nickname "Skyrunner".
In 1995, Stangl started speed climbing skyrunning high Andes peaks, setting a new standard for speed and endurance in mountaineering. Over the years, he achieved several remarkable feats, including:
On January 15, 2013, Stangl became the first person to ascend the Seven Second Summits, the second-highest peaks on all seven continents. On August 23, 2013, he reached the third highest peaks on all seven continents, completing the Triple Seven Summits.
Stangl's achievement was certified by Guinness World Records on September 17, 2013, solidifying his position as one of the greatest mountaineers of all time.
Stangl's remarkable achievements are a testament to his unwavering dedication, perseverance, and passion for mountaineering. He inspires countless individuals around the world with his courage and determination, proving that even the most daunting challenges can be overcome with the right mindset.
