Christian Welch is an Australian professional rugby league footballer known for his prop position with the Melbourne Storm in the National Rugby League (NRL). Born on July 19, 1994, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, Welch moved to Townsville, Queensland at a young age. He began playing hockey before switching to rugby league. Welch has an older brother, Brendan, and a younger sister, Lauren, and was raised by his mother, Lyn. The family later relocated to Gladstone, Queensland, and eventually settled in Brisbane, where Welch attended Villanova College, an Augustinian education for boys. After graduating from high school, he went on to study Commerce at the University of Queensland.
Welch played his junior rugby league for the Eastern Suburbs Tigers and Gladstone Brothers before being signed by the Melbourne Storm. In 2013 and 2014, he played for the Melbourne Storm's NYC team. On May 3, 2014, he represented the Queensland under-20s team against New South Wales.
Welch made his NRL debut in round 9 of the 2015 NRL season, playing for the Melbourne Storm against Parramatta. He went on to make nine more first-grade appearances that season. In his second season, Welch averaged 22 minutes over 17 games and ranked second at the club for offloads behind Jesse Bromwich. In 2016, he played in the NRL Grand Final loss to the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. The following year, Welch played eight of the first nine games for Melbourne Storm, averaging career highs in metres run and tackles per game.
In 2020, Welch played a crucial role in the Melbourne Storm's NRL premiership win. The same year, he also represented Queensland in the State of Origin series, showcasing his skills at the highest level.
