Born on July 27, 1958, in Calverton, Nottinghamshire, Dean grew up in a tumultuous household after his mother left when he was just six years old. His father remarried, and Dean never discussed his mother's departure with him or his stepmother. Despite this, Dean has since reconnected with his mother.

Before his skating career took off, Dean worked as a police constable with Nottinghamshire Police from 1974 to 1980. During this time, he began skating at the age of 10, receiving his first pair of skates as a Christmas gift. His parents, keen ballroom dancers themselves, encouraged his interest in ice skating.

Rise to Fame

Dean's first ice partner was Sandra Elson, with whom he began skating at 14 and won the British Junior Dance Championship. However, their partnership was short-lived due to personal differences. It was then that Dean started practicing with Jayne Torvill, another skater at the Nottingham rink. Under the guidance of coaches Janet Sawbridge and later Betty Callaway, Torvill and Dean's partnership blossomed.

By 1980, the duo had become British National Dance Champions and were medal contenders in international competitions. Dean's decision to resign from the police force allowed him to focus solely on his skating career, which ultimately led to their Olympic triumph.
