Christopher Hampton is a British playwright, screenwriter, translator, and film director, best known for his play Les Liaisons Dangereuses, an adaptation of the 18th-century novel of the same name. His work on the film adaptation earned him an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1988.
Born on January 26, 1946, in Faial, Azores, to British parents, Hampton's early life was marked by frequent relocations due to his father's job as a marine telecommunications engineer. He spent time in Aden, Yemen; Cairo and Alexandria, Egypt; Hong Kong; and Zanzibar.
After attending prep school at Reigate in Surrey, Hampton went on to study at Lancing College, an independent boarding school in West Sussex, where he was involved in boxing and the Combined Cadet Force (CCF). Notably, his contemporaries at Lancing included future dramatist David Hare and poet Harry Guest.
Hampton pursued German and French studies at New College, Oxford, as a Sacher Scholar, graduating with a starred First Class Degree in 1968. During his time at Oxford, he became involved in the theatre, and the Oxford University Dramatic Society (OUDS) performed his original play When Did You Last See My Mother.
