Born on January 14, 1936, in Montgomery, Alabama, Carter was born blind, but that didn't hinder his passion for music. He attended the Alabama School for the Blind in Talladega, Alabama, and later graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in music from Alabama State University in Montgomery.
Carter's professional music career began with his friend Calvin Scott, signing to the Fairlane label to release "I Wanna Dance But I Don't Know How" under the stage name Clarence & Calvin. After a series of unsuccessful singles, the duo joined Duke Records, renaming themselves the C & C Boys.
In 1965, Carter recorded "Step by Step" at Rick Hall's FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, which was released on the Atlantic Records subsidiary Atco label. Although it didn't chart, it paved the way for Carter's solo career.
After Scott was seriously injured in an auto accident, Carter continued as a solo singer and recorded for the Fame label. In 1967, he recorded "Tell Daddy," which reached number 35 on the Billboard R&B chart and inspired Etta James' answer record, "Tell Mama," for which Carter was credited as writer.
In 1968, Carter joined Atlantic Records, marking the beginning of his successful string of hits on the R&B and pop charts. His first two Atlantic singles, "Slip Away" and "Too Weak to Fight," were certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Carter's music has been featured in various films, TV shows, and commercials, including "The Wire," "The Simpsons," and "Burger King" advertisements. His song "Back Door Santa" has become a holiday classic, covered by artists like James Brown and Bon Jovi.
