Renowned bassist of Rainbow and Ozzy Osbourne's band, known for his iconic bass lines and contributions to heavy metal music.
Craig Gruber, the iconic American rock bassist, is best known as the original bassist of the legendary band Rainbow, formed by the guitar virtuoso Ritchie Blackmore. Gruber's thumping bass lines can be heard on Rainbow's debut album, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, released in 1975.
Before joining Rainbow, Gruber was a member of the band Elf, formed in 1967 with vocalist Ronnie James Dio, keyboardist Mickey Lee Soule, drummer Gary Driscoll, and guitarist David Feinstein. Elf released three albums between 1972 and 1975, showcasing Gruber's impressive bass-playing skills.
In mid-1975, Gruber, along with Dio, joined Ritchie Blackmore in his newly formed band Rainbow. However, soon after the release of the debut album, Blackmore fired everyone except Dio. Gruber's stint with Rainbow was brief, but his contribution to the band's early sound was significant.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Gruber collaborated with Gary Moore on his album Victims of the Future and toured with him, featuring on the live album We Want Moore in 1984. He also worked on Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell album, co-writing the song "Die Young" with Ronnie James Dio.
In 1980, Gruber formed Bible Black with former Elf and Rainbow drummer Gary Driscoll. The band released two albums, Bible Black (1981) and Ground Zero (1983), before Driscoll's tragic murder in 1987. In the 2000s, Gruber worked towards an Elf reunion, despite the passing of Driscoll and Ronnie James Dio.
In 2010, Gruber formed the metal band ED3N, featuring vocalist Jeff Fenholt and guitarist David Shankle of DSG and formerly Manowar. ED3N marked a new chapter in Gruber's career, blending classic rock with modern metal.
Craig Gruber's impact on the world of rock music is undeniable. His work with Rainbow, Elf, and other projects has influenced generations of musicians. Sadly, Gruber passed away on May 5, 2015, at the age of 63, after a battle with prostate cancer. His legacy lives on through his music, inspiring new generations of rock enthusiasts.
