American ice hockey defenseman who played 13 seasons in the NHL, winning a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 1996. Known for his rugged defensive play and physical presence on the ice.
Craig Wolanin, a former American professional ice hockey defenseman, is best known for his 13-year stint in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1985 to 1998. During his tenure, he played for several teams, including the New Jersey Devils, Quebec Nordiques, and Colorado Avalanche.
Wolanin was born on July 27, 1967, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Growing up, he played minor ice hockey for the Detroit Paddock team and won the Michigan AAA state hockey championship with the Compuware program.
In 1984, Wolanin joined the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he recorded five goals, 16 assists, and 95 penalty minutes in his lone season. His impressive performance led to him being drafted third overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft.
Wolanin made his NHL debut on October 10, 1985, against the Philadelphia Flyers, becoming the youngest player in the history of the Scouts/Rockies/Devils franchise at just 18 years and two months old. He played 44 games during his rookie season, recording two goals, 16 assists, and 74 penalty minutes.
In his second season, Wolanin established himself as a mainstay on the Devils' blueline, recording four goals, six assists, and 109 penalty minutes. He paired with Ken Daneyko for most of the season and scored the first playoff goal for the Devils franchise in Game 1 of the Wales Conference Quarterfinals during the 1988 Stanley Cup playoffs.
After spending seven seasons with the Devils, Wolanin played for the Quebec Nordiques and Colorado Avalanche before retiring in 1998. Throughout his NHL career, he amassed 631 games, 40 goals, 133 assists, and 894 penalty minutes.
Since his retirement from professional hockey, Wolanin has remained involved in the sport. He has worked as a scout for the NHL's Central Scouting Bureau and has been involved in various charitable initiatives, including working with the NHL's Hockey Fights Cancer program.
Craig Wolanin's NHL career may have spanned over a decade, but his impact on the sport extends beyond his playing years. He is remembered for his tough, physical play and his ability to log heavy minutes on the blueline. Wolanin's story serves as an inspiration to aspiring hockey players, demonstrating that hard work and dedication can lead to a successful career in the NHL.
