Daniel Samohin is no stranger to the world of figure skating. As the 2016 World Junior champion, he has made a name for himself in the international skating community. Samohin was born on March 12, 1998, in Tel Aviv, Israel, to a family of skaters. His parents, Irina and Igor Samohin, were both figure skaters who had competed internationally. In fact, his father had even coached Israel's national team for five years in the 1990s! Samohin's brother, Stanislav, also competed in figure skating for both Russia and Israel.
When Samohin was just 3.5 years old, he moved with his mother to California, USA, to join the rest of his family. San Diego became his hometown, and it was there that he began his figure skating journey in 2003.
Samohin's international debut came in 2013 at an ISU Junior Grand Prix event in Mexico, where he won the bronze medal. He went on to finish fourth at his second JGP assignment in Ostrava, Czech Republic. In 2014, he finished 12th at the World Junior Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.
In 2015, Samohin won the gold medal at the U.S. International Classic, and in 2016, he became the World Junior champion. He has also won two ISU Challenger Series medals and has represented Israel at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Samohin is Jewish and speaks two languages – Hebrew and English. He has a grandfather who lives in Russia and a grandmother who lives in Israel. Despite his busy schedule, Samohin remains close to his family, who have been his rock throughout his career.
