The seventh king of the Joseon Dynasty, he's known for being deposed and exiled at a young age, leading a tragic and short-lived reign. His story has been immortalized in Korean folklore and drama.
Danjong's reign was marked by his youth and inexperience, as he ascended to the throne at the tender age of 12. This led to a power vacuum, which was filled by his regents, Chief State Councillor Hwangbo In, and Left State Councillor General Kim Jongseo, along with his older sister, Princess Gyeonghye, acting as his guardian.
Danjong was born on August 18, 1441, during the reign of his grandfather, King Sejong. His mother, Crown Princess Consort Gwon, posthumously honored as Queen Hyeondeok, did not recover after giving birth and died the next day.
Danjong had one older sister, Princess Gyeonghye, and one older half-sister, Princess Gyeongsuk. His family was plagued by tragedy, with his mother's death and later, the coup that would overthrow him.
In 1453, Danjong's government was overthrown in a coup d'état led by his uncle, Grand Prince Suyang, who persuaded a number of scholars and officials to support his claim to the throne. Hwangbo In and Kim Jongseo, who had been instrumental in Danjong's government, were captured and killed in front of the gate of Gyeongbok Palace.
In late January 1454, Danjong married Lady Song, the 15-year-old daughter of Song Hyeonsu, of the Yeosan Song clan, who would later become known as Queen Jeongsun. However, his reign was short-lived, and in 1455, he was forced to abdicate and became the King Emeritus of Joseon, while his wife became Queen Dowager Uideok.
The following year, six court officials attempted to restore Danjong to power, but their plot was discovered, and they were immediately executed. Danjong was later demoted to Prince Nosan and exiled to Yeongwol.
His wife, Lady Song, was also kicked out of the palace, losing her status as queen dowager and being demoted to Princess Consort Nosan. Sadly, Danjong's life came to a tragic end in 1457, at the age of 16, when he was put to death while in exile.
Danjong's reign, although brief, had a significant impact on the Joseon dynasty. His uncle's coup and subsequent reign marked a turning point in Joseon history, leading to a period of turmoil and power struggles.
Despite his tragic fate, Danjong is remembered as a symbol of youth and inexperience, and a cautionary tale of the dangers of power struggles and family rivalries.
