A pioneering Hawaiian racing driver who competed in various motorsports, including IndyCar and Formula One, earning the nickname "On-Gas" for his fearless driving style.
Danny Ongais, a.k.a. "OntheGas," was a fearless and multifaceted racing driver who made history as the only Hawaiian-born driver to compete in the Indianapolis 500. Throughout his illustrious career, he conquered various racing disciplines, including motorcycle, sports car, CART, IndyCar, Formula One, and drag racing.
Born on May 21, 1942, in Kahului, Hawaii, Ongais' passion for racing was ignited at a tender age. By 14, he had already dipped his toes into motorcycle racing, tasting success and fueling his desire to pursue a career in the sport.
After serving as a paratrooper in the United States Army in Europe, Ongais returned to Hawaii and dedicated himself to motor racing. His hard work and talent earned him numerous accolades, including multiple drag racing championships in the 1960s.
Ongais' impressive resume boasts wins in various racing series:
Ongais was known for his fearlessness and daredevil spirit behind the wheel. While this trait earned him respect and admiration, it also led to multiple crashes, some resulting in injuries. A near-fatal accident at the 1981 Indianapolis 500 forced him to take a break from racing for almost a year.
In 1996, at the age of 54, Ongais made a remarkable comeback to racing, substituting for Scott Brayton in the Indianapolis 500. Starting from the back of the grid, he impressively finished seventh in what would be his final 500.
Ongais' achievements have been recognized with inductions into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (2000) and the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame (2001). His legacy continues to inspire future generations of racers, cementing his place as one of the most versatile and accomplished drivers in motorsport history.
Outside of racing, Ongais was a devoted husband and father. He passed away on February 26, 2022, leaving behind a rich legacy and a wealth of memories for his fans and loved ones.
In his honor, we celebrate the achievements of this motorsport icon, whose unwavering passion and dedication to his craft continue to inspire and thrill enthusiasts around the world.
