A pioneering R&B musician who scored a huge hit with the 1962 instrumental single "Rinky Dink", and is known for his soulful organ playing and catchy compositions.
Known for his infectious, foot-tapping instrumental hits, Dave Baby Cortez is a legendary American pop and R&B organist and pianist who shot to fame with his 1959 chart-busting single, "The Happy Organ." As the second earliest surviving singer to have a solo number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100, Cortez carved a niche for himself in the music industry with his iconic Hammond electric organ sounds.
Born David Cortez Clowney on August 13, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan, Cortez was encouraged by his father to pursue a musical career. He attended Northwestern High School in the city and honed his piano skills for 10 years before switching to the organ.
Cortez made his first record in 1956 under his own name and sang with two doo-wop groups, the Pearls and the Valentines, in the mid-1950s. His stint as the musical director for Little Anthony and the Imperials further cemented his reputation in black pop music circles.
In 1959, Cortez was scheduled to record his original song "The Happy Organ" during a recording session. Initially intended as a vocal track, Cortez demurred, feeling his singing was not up to par. That's when he spotted a Hammond electric organ sitting idle in the studio corner, rarely used in pop music at the time. Cortez's curiosity got the better of him, and he decided to try it out.
The resulting instrumental track, featuring drummer Gary Hammond and co-written by celebrity photographer James J. Kriegsmann and Kurt Wood, became the first pop-rock hit to feature the electronic organ as the lead instrument. The guitar solo was courtesy of session musician Wild Jimmy Spruill. Released on the independent Clock Records label, "The Happy Organ" soared to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming the first instrumental number one hit.
Cortez's subsequent success was swift and sweet. He released an LP featuring "The Happy Organ" on RCA Victor, which further solidified his position as a rising star. In 1962, he scored another Top Ten hit with "Rinky Dink" on Chess Records, showcasing his versatility as a musician.
Dave Baby Cortez's innovative use of the Hammond electric organ paved the way for future generations of musicians. His influence can be seen in various genres, from rock to pop, and even in the work of contemporaries like Booker T. Jones and Georgie Fame.
Cortez's legacy extends beyond his music as well. As one of the earliest African American musicians to achieve mainstream success, he played a significant role in breaking down racial barriers in the music industry.
Today, Cortez's music remains a testament to his innovative spirit and his ability to craft infectious, memorable tunes that continue to delight audiences across generations.
