Byron was educated at Forest School, Walthamstow, an independent school in the United Kingdom, where he excelled at sports and was a member of the school's 1st XI football team. From the mid-1960s to early 1970s, he worked as a session musician for Avenue Recordings, singing lead and backing vocals on cover versions of Top 20 hits.

The Formation of Uriah Heep

In 1967, Byron teamed up with Mick Box to form the band Spice, which later became Uriah Heep. The band's name was inspired by the character Uriah Heep from Charles Dickens' novel David Copperfield. With the addition of keyboardist-guitarist-singer-songwriter Ken Hensley, the band secured a recording deal with United Artists and released their debut single "What About the Music/In Love."

Byron sang on ten Uriah Heep albums, including Very 'eavy... Very 'umble, Salisbury, Look at Yourself, Demons and Wizards, and The Magician's Birthday.
