Born on 7 September 1950 in Birmingham, Cannadine attended King Edward VI Five Ways School and later pursued his academic endeavors at Clare College, Cambridge, where he achieved a double first in history. He furthered his education at St John's College, Oxford, completing his DPhil, and later at Princeton University as a Jane Eliza Procter Visiting Fellow.
