A skilled playmaking center who played over 500 NHL games, known for his speed and agility on the ice.
David Desharnais is a Canadian professional ice hockey center known for his prolific scoring ability and gentlemanly playstyle, which has earned him numerous accolades throughout his career. Currently playing for HC Fribourg-Gottern of the National League (NL), Desharnais has proven that even without being drafted, he can still make a significant impact in the world of hockey.
Born on September 14, 1986, in Quebec, Canada, Desharnais began his hockey journey playing in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments with minor ice hockey teams from Lotbinière, Quebec, and Quebec City. His early years laid the foundation for his future success, and he eventually made his way to the Chicoutimi Saguenéens of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).
Desharnais spent four seasons with the Saguenéens, where he consistently improved his scoring totals each year, culminating in 38 goals in 61 games during his final season. As team captain, he amassed 374 points in 262 games, earning him the prestigious Frank J. Selke Memorial Trophy three times consecutively from 2004-05 to 2006-07. This recognition as the QMJHL's most gentlemanly player was also accompanied by the distinction of being named the most gentlemanly player of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) in 2007.
Despite his impressive junior career, Desharnais was overlooked in the NHL Entry Draft. However, he was given a chance to prove himself when the Montreal Canadiens invited him to their training camp in 2007. Although he didn't make the team, he was assigned to the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL, where he made an immediate impact. In his professional debut, Desharnais scored 106 points in 68 regular season games, leading the league in scoring, and added 33 points in 22 playoff games, helping the Cyclones win their first Kelly Cup championship. His phenomenal performance earned him ECHL Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, and a spot on both the All-Rookie Team and the First All-Star Team.
Following his successful season with the Cyclones, the Canadiens signed Desharnais to a two-year, two-way contract in 2008. He continued to excel in the AHL, eventually making his NHL debut with the Canadiens in 2009. Desharnais has since played for the Edmonton Oilers and the New York Rangers, accumulating 184 points in 504 NHL games. He has also represented Canada in several international tournaments, including the 2014 IIHF World Championship.
David Desharnais's remarkable journey serves as an inspiration to young hockey players everywhere, demonstrating that success is within reach even without being drafted. His on-ice accomplishments, combined with his sportsmanship and dedication, have earned him a lasting legacy in the hockey world.
"It's not about the size of the player, it's about the size of the heart." - David Desharnais
