Grisman was born on March 23, 1945, in Passaic, New Jersey, into a Conservative Jewish household. His father, a professional trombonist, introduced him to music at a young age, teaching him piano lessons when he was just seven years old. As a teenager, Grisman played piano, mandolin, and saxophone, laying the foundation for his future musical endeavors.
In the early 1960s, Grisman attended New York University, where he became part of the Even Dozen Jug Band, alongside Maria Muldaur and John Sebastian. He then joined the bluegrass band the Kentuckians, led by Red Allen, and later played in the psychedelic rock band Earth Opera with Peter Rowan. This eclectic mix of influences would eventually shape his distinctive Dawg music style.
When Grisman was 17, he was invited on stage by Doc Watson to join him on mandolin for a rendition of "In the Pines." This pivotal moment marked the beginning of his journey towards creating a new sound. Grisman's music soon became a fusion of bluegrass, folk, and jazz, with a dash of Old World Mediterranean string band music and modern jazz fusion. This unique blend would come to be known as Dawg music.
In the 1970s, Grisman formed the David Grisman Quintet with Darol Anger, Joe Carroll, Todd Phillips, and Tony Rice. The quintet released their eponymous first album in 1977, followed by "Hot Dawg" in 1979, which showcased Grisman's innovative style.
