David Miner, born July 24, 1945, is an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter, best known as a founding member of the iconic 1960s rock band, The Great Society. As one of the primary songwriters and lead vocalists, Miner played a pivotal role in shaping the band's unique sound and style.
In the early 1960s, Miner, along with Jerry, Darby, and Grace Slick, co-founded The Great Society, a groundbreaking band that would go on to make a significant impact on the rock music scene. During his time with the band, Miner wrote many of their notable songs, including "That's How It Is," "You Can't Cry," and "Daydream Nightmare Love." His soulful voice and poignant songwriting helped define the band's distinctive sound, which blended folk rock, psychedelia, and counterculture ideals.
In 1966, Miner left The Great Society and embarked on a new journey, moving to El Paso, Texas, to pursue a college education. He attended the University of Texas at El Paso, where he met his second wife, Anna, and earned a BA in English in 1970. Miner went on to complete his graduate studies at Binghamton University of the State University of New York, earning a PhD in Comparative Literature. His academic pursuits were supported by prestigious fellowships, including the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and the National Defense Education Act Fellowship.
After completing his graduate studies, Miner taught in the City University of New York for eight years, sharing his knowledge and passion for literature with students. He then transitioned into the business world, leading a quiet life away from the spotlight. Although he didn't continue his music career full-time, Miner still made time for music, playing with local bands in New York City, such as The Axles, Avatar, and The New Race, during the 1980s.
In the 2000s, Miner rekindled his passion for music, launching his solo project, Helion Magister. He released his first album, Vaquero, in 2004, and has been working on new material, including an album titled Songs I Wrote in the 60s But Never Played the Way I Felt Until Now. This new chapter in Miner's creative journey showcases his continued growth as an artist and his unwavering dedication to his craft.
David Miner has been married four times and has six children from these relationships. He has been married to his current wife, Patricia, for nearly two decades. Miner's legacy extends beyond his music, as he has made significant contributions to the fields of literature and education. His story serves as a testament to the power of following one's passions, both in art and in life.
David Miner's remarkable journey, from his early days with The Great Society to his current endeavors as Helion Magister, is a testament to the power of creativity, perseverance, and passion.
