David Sancious, an American musician born on November 30, 1953, is best known for his stint as a member of Bruce Springsteen's iconic backing group, the E Street Band. As a multi-instrumentalist, Sancious brought his mastery of keyboards and guitar to the table, contributing to Springsteen's first three albums, and later on Human Touch, Tracks, and Western Stars.
Sancious' musical journey began at a tender age of seven, when he started learning classical piano. By eleven, he had taught himself guitar, and soon found himself immersed in the vibrant Asbury Park music scene during his teenage years.
Sancious' involvement with the E Street Band marked the beginning of a defining period in his career. From 1970 to 1973, he divided his time between New Jersey and Richmond, Virginia, where he worked as a studio musician at Alpha Studios, recording jingles and sessions. During this time, he also played keyboards on Springsteen's debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.
In 1974, Sancious left the E Street Band to form his own band, Tone, and released several albums. He went on to become a sought-after session and touring musician, working with a plethora of renowned artists, including Stanley Clarke, Narada Michael Walden, Zucchero Fornaciari, Eric Clapton, Peter Gabriel, Jack Bruce, and Sting, among many others.
