Born on May 25, 1926, in Lyndhurst, Hampshire, Wynne was the son of Commander Charles Edward Wynne and Millicent Beyts. He was educated at Stowe School and later served in the Royal Navy during World War II. After the war, Wynne pursued his passion for zoology at Trinity College, Cambridge, before finally devoting himself to sculpture in 1950.
