Derek Ridgers is a British photographer renowned for his captivating portraits of iconic figures in music, film, and club culture. With a career spanning over four decades, he has lensed legends like James Brown, the Spice Girls, Clint Eastwood, and Johnny Depp, as well as politicians, artists, writers, fashion designers, and sports personalities.
Born on October 20, 1950, in Chiswick, west London, Ridgers trained as a graphic artist at Ealing School of Art between 1967 and 1971. It was during this time that he developed a passion for music, attending numerous live events, including the legendary 14 Hour Technicolour Dream.
After completing art school, Ridgers worked as an art director in advertising for ten years, where one of his clients was a camera company. This sparks his interest in photography, and he eventually decided to pursue it as a profession.
The emergence of punk rock in the late 1970s fascinated Ridgers. He began taking photos at punk nights at the Hammersmith Palais, using a secondhand Nikkormat camera and a homemade flash bracket. This marked the beginning of his photography career.
Some of his earliest published work featured punk bands like Adam and the Ants, the Slits, Penetration, the Clash, and the Damned. His exhibition at the ICA in 1978 cemented his reputation as a photographer.
