Born as Theerthagiri Sarkarai Manradiar on April 17, 1756, near present-day Kangeyam, Tiruppur district, Chinnamalai grew up to be a strong leader who challenged the authority of the Kingdom of Mysore. He initially fought against the Mysore Kingdom's taxation policies in the Kongu region, only to later form an alliance with Tipu Sultan to combat the British East India Company.
Chinnamalai's military prowess was showcased through his successful guerrilla warfare tactics, which allowed him to win several battles against the British. His notable victories include the battles of Cauvery in 1801, Odanilai in 1802, and Arachalur in 1804. These triumphs cemented his reputation as a skilled and fearless warrior.
Despite his initial successes, Chinnamalai's army was eventually defeated in 1805, and he was forced to flee from the British forces. He was later captured and hanged at Sankagiri Fort on July 31, 1805, along with his two brothers. This tragic event marked the end of his remarkable life, but his legacy lived on.

Statues and memorials have been erected in Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Erode, and Odanilai to honor his memory. In 2005, India Post released a commemorative postage stamp in his honor. Furthermore, the Tiruchirapalli division of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation was previously known as Dheeran Chinnamalai Transport Corporation, and the headquarters of Erode district collectorate and the Erode Municipal Corporation bear his name.
