Born on January 1, 1927, in Dallas, Texas, Walker was raised by his father, Ewell Doak Walker Sr., a school teacher, and his mother, Emma. He had a younger sister, Elsa, and was an exceptional athlete from a young age. Walker attended Highland Park High School, where he excelled in five sports: football, basketball, baseball, swimming, and track and field.
After graduating from high school in 1945, Walker joined the Merchant Marine, but was discharged when the war ended in August 1945. Two days later, he began his college football career at Southern Methodist University (SMU), where he played in five games in November 1945 and won All-Southwest Conference honors. Walker's impressive performance earned him a spot in the annual East-West Shrine Game in San Francisco, where he threw a tying touchdown pass for the West team.
Walker's exceptional skills on the field led to him being awarded the Heisman Trophy in 1948. His impressive college football career was capped off with his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1959.
In recognition of his outstanding achievements, the Doak Walker Award was established in 1990 to honor the top running back in college football each year. Walker's induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986 solidified his status as a football legend.
