Don Nix, a name synonymous with Southern soul and rock, is best known for his iconic song "Going Down", a blues-rock standard that has been covered by legendary bands like The Who and The Rolling Stones. Born on September 27, 1941, in Memphis, Tennessee, Nix grew up in a musical family. His brother Larry became a mastering engineer for Stax Records and Ardent Studios in Memphis. Nix's musical journey began as a saxophonist for the Memphis-based MarKeys, alongside Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn. The group scored a hit single with "Last Night" in 1961.
After leaving the MarKeys, Nix worked as a session musician for Stax Records, playing with legendary artists like Leon Russell, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, and Freddie King. His songwriting skills earned him recognition, and his composition "Going Down" became a blues-rock standard.
In 1971, Nix made the acquaintance of George Harrison, leading to Nix organizing the backup vocalists for the historic Concert for Bangladesh. This event showcased Nix's ability to bring together talented musicians for a greater cause.
