Chinese striker who played for Manchester United and the Chinese national team, known for being the first Chinese player to join the Premier League.
Dong Fangzhuo is a Chinese former professional footballer who made history by becoming the first East Asian player to sign with Manchester United, one of the world's most renowned football clubs. Born on January 23, 1985, Dong's remarkable skills on the field earned him a spot in the most successful club team in China, Dalian Shide, and eventually, a coveted position in Manchester United.
Dong's journey to stardom began in 2000 when he was named the most valuable player in an under-17 tournament. His impressive performance caught the attention of Dalian Sidelong, which he signed with and helped finish as runners-up in the Chinese Jia-B League in 2002. This achievement earned him a move to Dalian Shide, where he scored his first goal in the second match of the qualifying stages of the 2002-03 AFC Champions League.
In January 2004, Dong made a groundbreaking move to Manchester United for an initial fee of £500,000, which could have risen to £3.5 million depending on appearances. However, due to work permit issues, he was loaned out to Royal Antwerp in Belgium to gain first-team experience. In his first season, he scored one goal in nine appearances, gradually adjusting to his new environment.
In his second season, Dong began to make a name for himself, scoring six goals in his first seven appearances as a substitute off the bench. Although injuries and international duty disrupted his form in the latter half of the season, he finished with seven goals in 22 appearances in all competitions.
In the 2005-06 season, Dong impressed for Royal Antwerp, finishing as the top goalscorer for both his team and the Belgian Second Division with 18 goals. His outstanding performance earned him a call-up to join Manchester United on their preseason tour, where he made his unofficial debut in a friendly match in Hong Kong, scoring a goal in a 2-0 win.
Dong's remarkable journey paved the way for other Asian players to enter the international football scene. His accomplishments have inspired a new generation of Chinese footballers, and his legacy continues to be felt in the sport.
