Hathaway was born on October 1, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, to Drusella Huntley, and was raised by his grandmother, Martha Pitts, in the Carr Square housing project of St. Louis, Missouri. After graduating from Vashon High School in 1963, Hathaway received a fine arts scholarship to study music at Howard University in Washington, D.C. It was during this period that he met his roommate and drummer, Ric Powell, who would later launch Hathaway's musical career as a member of The Ric Powell Trio.
Hathaway worked as a songwriter, session musician, and producer for Curtis Mayfield's Curtom Records in Chicago, where he honed his skills and developed his unique sound. His breakthrough came with the release of "The Ghetto," a poignant and powerful song that addressed social issues of the time.
