Born Michael John Duke Robillard on October 4, 1948, in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, he began his musical journey at a tender age, influenced by the likes of Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, and Fats Domino. His early bands, Mike Honey Bear Robillard and Roomful of Blues, laid the foundation for his future success.
In 1967, Robillard co-founded Roomful of Blues, a band that would become a hallmark of the blues scene. He spent over ten years with the band, refining his craft and developing his signature style. After departing in 1979, he worked with legendary musicians Robert Gordon and the Legendary Blues Band, further honing his skills.
In 1990, Robillard joined the Fabulous Thunderbirds, replacing Jimmie Vaughan, and toured extensively with the band. Concurrently, he pursued a solo career, exploring various genres and recording albums that showcased his extraordinary talent. Notable solo projects include his work with jazz guitarist Herb Ellis and the swing trio New Guitar Summit with Gerry Beaudoin and Jay Geils.
Robillard's impressive discography has earned him numerous awards and nominations. He has won two W. C. Handy Awards for Best Blues Guitarist (2000 and 2001) and has been nominated for two Grammy Awards, including Best Contemporary Blues Album for Guitar Groove-a-Rama (2007) and Best Traditional Blues Album for Stomp The Blues Tonight (2010).
