Savage made his professional debut in 1962 in Macon, Georgia, under the ring name Lonnie Brown. He spent the next few years competing across North America, Hawaii, and Japan, using various ring names such as Mr. X and Dutch Schultz. However, it was his stint in the Kansas City territory that saw him adopt his most famous ring name, Dutch Savage.
In 1966, Savage settled in the Pacific Northwest region, splitting his time between PNW in Portland and NWA All Star Wrestling in Vancouver, British Columbia. This period saw him form a solid tag team with Hard Boiled Haggerty in the AWA territory, although he eventually left to pursue a trip to Japan.
Savage's most memorable matches during this time were against the masked Doctor X (Dick Beyer, aka The Destroyer) and Mad Dog Vachon. He initially wrestled as a heel, but turned face in 1971 during a feud with Bull Ramos in Portland.
Savage's most notable achievement came when he formed a legendary tag team with Jimmy Snuka in PNW, winning six Pacific Northwest tag team titles, with one of their reigns lasting a record 11 months in 1974-75. He also originated the Coal Miners Glove match in 1972 in Eugene, Oregon, and remained undefeated in that specialty match throughout his career.
In Vancouver, British Columbia, Savage captured 13 NWA Canadian tag team titles, second only to the record of 18 Canadian tag titles won by Don Leo Jonathan, with whom Savage won the championship once in 1977.
