Born Edgar Eugene Roland, Jr. on August 3, 1963, Ed Roland's fascination with music began at a young age. One of the first records that sparked his interest in rock music was Elton John's Greatest Hits, which he purchased as a child.
After finishing high school, Roland studied songwriting and guitar at Berklee College of Music in Boston for one year. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, he was part of bands like EdE and Marching TwoStep, which included future producer and music executive Matt Serletic, future executive Michelle Rhea Caplinger, and longtime Collective Soul drummer Shane Evans.
In 1991, Roland released an indie album called EdE Roland under the independent label Core, showcasing his abilities to compose, record, and produce his own original music. He then formed Collective Soul, initially named Brothers Brides, with hopes of finding success in the music business.
After initial rejections, Collective Soul independently released Hints, Allegations and Things Left Unsaid in 1993, a compilation of Roland's songwriting demos created during his time at Real 2 Reel Studios. The album eventually caught the attention of WJRR 101.1 in Orlando, Florida, and several other college radio stations, becoming an underground hit.
The popularity of "Shine" and Collective Soul's unique sound convinced Atlantic Records to sign the band, catapulting them to mainstream success. The band's subsequent albums, Cosmic Thing (1995) and Discard Your Fear (2000), solidified their position in the alternative rock scene.
In addition to Collective Soul, Roland has been active with his side project, Ed Roland and the Sweet Tea Project, which allows him to explore a more rootsy, Americana sound. This venture has resulted in albums like Milking the Stars (2013) and Goodnight, Dear Moon (2018).
Throughout his career, Ed Roland has been recognized with several awards and nominations, including a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song for "Gel" in 1996.
